Your First Therapy Session: What to Expect

Starting therapy can feel both hopeful and uncertain. Many people wonder what they’re supposed to say or if they need to have everything figured out before they begin. You don’t.

Your first therapy session is simply a place to start.

Mountain In Fog

Getting to Know Your Story

In our first session, we’ll talk about what has brought you to therapy and what has been feeling heavy, stuck, or overwhelming in your life. Some clients arrive with a clear story, while others simply know something doesn’t feel quite right yet. Both are completely okay.

My role is to listen, ask thoughtful questions, and begin understanding the bigger picture of your experiences and patterns.

Moving at a Comfortable Pace

There is no pressure to share everything right away. Therapy moves at a pace that feels safe and supportive.

At Meer Soul Counseling, therapy isn’t about rushing to solutions. Instead, we slow down and begin exploring what may be happening beneath the surface. Approaches like EMDR and Internal Family Systems (IFS) can help process experiences more deeply over time, but the first session is simply about beginning.

A Space to Exhale

Many clients describe their first session as a place where they can finally speak openly about things they’ve been carrying alone. There’s nothing you need to prepare — just come as you are.
